Poverty in Bangladesh has declined remarkably since the early-2000s as it shows the accelerated economic growth in a few years. The remarkable progress in poverty alleviation has been recognized by international institutions. According to the World Bank, Bangladesh’s poverty rate fell from 82% in 1972 to 18.5% in 2010, to 13.8% in 2016, and below 9% in 2018, as measured by the percentage of people living below the international extreme poverty line. Based on the current rate of poverty reduction, Bangladesh is projected to eliminate extreme poverty by 2021, the first nation in South Asia to do so. For this, we still need to work hard and create opportunities for the poorest people to be involved in some sorts of income generation activities.

Strong national poverty reduction makes differences in welfare trends between rural and urban Bangladesh. The national poverty rate fell in both rural and urban areas, but the speed of reduction was much slower in urban Bangladesh, largely because of slower rates of poverty reduction in Dhaka and increasing poverty in Chittagong. There was no progress in reducing extreme poverty in urban areas: the proportion of the urban population living in extreme poverty was 7.7 percent in 2010 and 7.6 percent in 2016. Dost Aid Bangladesh society is going to initiate more activities for poverty reduction of the city areas.
